Build because the Müngersdorferstadion in Cologne could not be renovated in time for the 1974 World Cup due to lack of funds. Borussia Dortmund was very pleased with this decision because their stadium Rote Erde was falling apart. The old ground still exists next to the Westfalenstadion.

The Westfalenstadion was opened on April 2nd 1974 when Borussia Dortmund played against Schalke 04. During the 1974 World Cup, one of the best World Cup matches ever was played here: The Netherlands played against Brazil (2-0).
