José Amalfitani (Fortín) in Buenos Aires

Opened: April 11, 1943
Seats: 49.540
Team:  Velez Sarsfield

Another ground that hosted matches of the 1978 world cup. 3 matches were played here (Spain 1 - Austria 2, Austria 1 - Sweden 0 and Sweden 0 - Spain 1). Velez Sarsfield are the champions of the 2005 Clausura.

When I visited the ground I asked somebody about the difference between Velez Sarsfield, River Plate and Boca Juniors. His answer was great: "River Plate got the arrogance of a top team, Boca got the fans of a top team, Velez IS the top team".

The stadium was build in 1943. The ground on which the stadium was build, Maldonado marsh, has been obtained from the Ferrocarril Oeste's authorities. The first match was against River Plate (2-2). In 1951 the original ground was already replaced by a new ground, made of cement. In 1968 the next improvement took place: the stadium inaugurated the best sports field lighting in America.

The last big changes were made to meet the FIFA requirements for the 1978 world championships.
