Vicente Calderón in Madrid

Vicente Calderón in Madrid

Opened: October 2, 1966
Seats: 54.851
Team:  Club Atlético de Madrid

I visited this stadium the day after Arrigo Sacchi was sacked by Jesus Gil y Gil. Beautiful to watch the journalists and reporters nervously running around the stadium in expectation of news.

The ground was openend on October 2, 1966 in a match against Valencia (1-1). The original name of the ground is Estádio del Manzanares, because the ground is situated on the banks of the river Manzanares. In 1972 the ground was renamed in honour of Vicente Calderón, the president of Atlético from 1964-1980.
