Where you can find the Alkmaarderhout nowadays, you once
found the famous cycling track. Between 1934 and 1941 a lot of cyclists paddled
their rounds here. On August 14, 1954, the first professional match in the
Netherlands has been played here (Alkmaar '54 vs. Venlo, 3-0).
In the seventies, the ground was renovated a couple of times and had
approximately 20.000 seats. For safety reasons, the number of seats was
diminished to
8.397.
In 2000 AZ and the city of Alkmaar signed a contract to build a new ground. This new stadium, the DSB Stadion, was opened on August 4, 2006 with a match against Arsenal FC (0-3 loss).
