Opened: 1928
Seats: 60.000
Team: None
The Olympic Games of 1928 were held in this ground. The ground opened in 1928 (17 days before the olympics did start) with 35.000 seats. The Olympic Stadium was build for all sports; that's how it received the nickname 'Temple of Sports'. During the '28 olympics, Uruguay won the football gold medal. In 1936 the number of seats was increased to 60.000. Not only because football became more popular, but also because Rotterdam build a stadium 'De Kuip' with 65.000 seats. Until 1982 FC Amsterdam played in the Olympic Stadium. This team is no longer existing. Ajax used to play in the Olympisch Stadion their big matches (league and Dutch cup matches against Feyenoord and PSV) because their home ground 'De Meer' was too small. Since September 27, 1989 Ajax played all European matches in the Olympic. On this date a match against Austria Vienna was ended because a 'fan' threw something on the pitch. After this incident Ajax was suspended by UEFA for 1 year. There have been played no football matches anymore in the Olympic ever since Ajax is playing in the Amsterdam Arena.
